How to Stop Snoring

Snoring can be quite a dilemma, and can interrupt one's sleep, maybe more so, the sleep of one's partner.

And why does one snore? A person snores because the air passage of the throat is obstructed, causing the throat or nose muscles to vibrate, creating a snoring sound.

Aside from the fact that it is irritating to the ear, and waking up your partner, the important reason why you would want to stop or put an end to snoring is because it can be hazardous to one self.

Snoring can be a signal that you are gaining weight, or that you are having a cold, an allergy, or sinus congestion. Or that you drank too much alcohol. These too can block the airways.

To further explain why these cause snoring, let us take them into consideration one by one.

Lack of exercise and overeating steers fat deposits around the throat, more commonly experienced by men. A person with a fat neck has the possibility of snoring.

Alcohol initiates relaxation among the muscles, thus the airways tend to collapse more willingly, causing a much severe snoring than usual.

Slipping pills can have opposing effect on the tone of the muscle on your airway. It reduces the ability of the muscles to stop closure while asleep.

Smoking increases the degree of probability of snoring. The more cigarettes are smoked in a day, the more it increases one's chance of snoring since each cigarette can develop congestion of the nasal passages.

Sleeping positions are appoint too, to consider. Lying on one's side may reduce snoring. Falling asleep on the back encourages snoring, since while the muscles relax, the airways are squashed.

Another cause is allergy. Allergic rhinitis cause snoring. It involves inflammation of the nose and though limited, obstruction still occurs.

A preventive snoring solution is what we deal in first. The change in our lifestyle. Have enough exercise, avoid being overweight. Also, a change in sleeping positions and putting pillow when we sleep.

Then if these does not work, try these:

Hypnosis. With the power of hypnosis, one can be able to tell the subconscious mind to turn off the snoring switch.

Then there the stop snoring aid, the "snoring stopper" which supports one's jaw while sleeping, causing the mouth to be kept close.

Other options include surgery. There is the traditional surgery that tightens your throat, sort of like a face lift, but only for the throat. This procedure, most of the time reduces snoring.

Laser surgery is also one option, though not advised to light or occasional snoring. Called laser- assisted uvulopalatoplasty(LAUP). It uses a small "held by the hand" laser beam to make short the soft palate and also remove or take away the uvula.

Dental devices and nasal strips are also a way to reduce snoring with form-fitting pieces for the mouth that help the position of the tongue and soft palate to keep open the air passage.

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). This makes use of a pressurized mask over the nose while or during sleep. This mask is connected to a pump that keep airways open because it forces the air through.

It is always comforting to know that snoring can be stopped. It just takes a lot of patience, the determination to change one's lifestyle, and sometimes a lot of money, but then, hey, everything in this world costs something in one way or the other. The important thing is, one can have positive results, and a peaceful sleep.
